The following memo was composed just a few hours before learning that Fr. William Thomas, pastor of Holy Spirit Partish in Hamburg, MI died this morning, July 23rd. Pray for the repose of his soul. It should be added--regarding his many accomplishments-- that Father Bill brought great speakers to the parish such as Fr. Mitch Pacwa and Fr. Coropi to preach missions there---speakers nationally known for their love of the Church.
A memo regarding Fr. William Thomas--pastor of Holy Spirit Parish--Hamburg, Michigan.
Fr. William Thomas has fallen into a coma. He is in a hosp ital in Germany where, about 10 days ago, he was admitted with pneumonia. He has been in a coma since Wednesday of this week (July 18th, 2007). He is in critical condition and may be dying. Sorry to sound so melodramatic, but these are just the facts. It is important to keep in mind, especially in light of the accusations against Fr. Thomas by a member of Holy Spirit Parish, the many great and good things Fr. William Thomas accomplished as pastor of Holy Spirit Parish. Fr. Thomas showed himself to be a true son of the Church. Under his leadership Holy Spirit Parish was known for its orthodoxy in teaching and liturgy. Here is only a partial list of Fr. Thomas's accomplishments and contributions to the life of Holy Spirit Parish and the life of the Church:
1) He insisted that the Holy Tabernacle be in the center of the church sanctuary.
2.) He installed a new marble altar to give glory to the Eucharistic Lord (to replace wooden altar).
3.) Placement of statues to make the sterile church interior more Catholic and more condusive to prayer and worship.
4.) Promotion of Perpetual Eucharistic adoration.
5.) Installment of a Communion rail.
6.) Purchase of a quality organ to enhance Eucharistic worship.
7.) Consistent support for all pro-life activities.
8.) Support for Michigan Life-Span--making Holy Spirit an affiliate parish of that group.
9.) Support for the missionary activity of Fr. Paublo Straub and his missionary order in Mexico.
10. First Holy Communion, Confirmation and marriage preparation totally consistent with the teachings of the Church.
11. Support for a parish bookstore with materials completely faithful to the teaching of the Church.
12. Founded a parish school--so there would be a parish school faithful to the teachings of the Church.
13. All Fr. Thomas's homilies strongly and unabashedly supported the teachings of the Church--he always spoke the truth and never flinched in this regard.
14. Holy Spirit, under Fr. Thomas's leadership, only had altar boys serving all the masses---to promote vocations to the priesthood.
15. Fr. Thomas consistently and couregeously spoke and worked against the homosexual agenda--even actively promoting the Michigan Marriage Amendment when the bishops were slow to do so. He really went out on a limb here and his advocacy prevailed.Fr. Thomas has served Jesus and His Church and has shown enormous love and commitment to the Catholic Faith. PRAY FOR HIM NOW. And please pray for Holy Spirit Parish.

You will probably delete this.... don't care because you are way off base anyway. But to address some of your bullet points:

Answer: nope…. That was Fr. Tim who made those plans, and agreed to let Fr Bill implement them. Fr Tim was the pastor you could often find in prayer in the church…in front of the tabernacle, not Fr. Bill
3.) Placement of statues to make the sterile church interior more Catholic and more condusive (sic) to prayer and worship.
Answer: not really. Both additions were donations initiated by the donor, not Fr Bill
4.) Promotion of Perpetual Eucharistic adoration.
Answer : Fr. Bill had very little to do with the Adoration Chapel. In fact, his directive, after much pleading from parishioners to have Adoration, was simply "You can have it but I won't support it. And you need to get private funds to make the chapel." Additionally, he was inside the chapel one time…. One time. Even the reposing was left to the Deacon.
5.) Installment of a Communion rail.
Answer: What communion rail? Yes there is an unusable rail that separates the sanctuary. All that work was donated, or it would not have happened. And when asked to consider enlarging the sanctuary and then put in a real communion rail, he said NO.
6.) Purchase of a quality organ to enhance Eucharistic worship.
Answer: Finagle is the word. Can you imagine the imagination required to first pay an organ company a $6000 “consultant fee”, then pay $50,000 (his limit for each check written), and then tell the diocese the rest would be donated. That never happened… came up about 25k short…. So the parish had to pay it.
9.) Support for the missionary activity of Fr. Paublo Straub and his missionary order in Mexico.
Answer: perhaps. However, anyone there in Mexico can attest to what work he contributed. And just ask the angry parents what he allowed to go on down there. (or at World Youth Day too) Ask Fr Straub why he is content that Fr. Bill stopped attending those annual trips.
10. First Holy Communion, Confirmation and marriage preparation totally consistent with the teachings of the Church.
Answer: perhaps. Although there were different rules for those who were home schooled and those who attended the CCD classes (in ever dwindling numbers) . Real credit should be given to the DRE who did all the work, and then got Fr Bill’s okay.
11. Support for a parish bookstore with materials completely faithful to the teaching of the Church.
Answer: The thriving bookstore safeguarded its profits in CDs and MoneyMarkets (until Fr. Bill ran out of money for silly things like payroll – it too was transferred to the general fund) in the event the parish ever could have a new and larger store. The intention was for it to pay for itself. And it did. If you take the time to actually ask the ones who donated time and effort to the bookstore, you will find out who really suggested titles and products to sell.

Answer: Fr. Bill's "school" was over the numerous objections of a majority of the parish that [1] we could not afford it [2] it will not be attended by the great body of home schoolers as he "predicted" it would be [3] there is no "waiting list" from other schools. [4] the parish preferred ADULT education first and foremost.
Instead, he mislead the parish into thinking he was going to promote ADULT Catholic Education, and NOT a school.
Instead, the school is faltering badly and has become the predicted drain on the parish. It will close soon.
13. All Fr. Thomas's homilies strongly and unabashedly supported the teachings of the Church--he always spoke the truth and never flinched in this regard.
Answer: As for his homilies... there were years of homilies, perhaps hundreds on tape. Yep, he talked a good line.... except for the 12-15 weeks each year he was gone being the "charismatic" and “involved-in-all-causes” priest who left Germany, went to Virginia, spent their money, and was now at Holy Spirit.
Money was a serious problem, not just his computer activities. We could discuss endless examples of how he spent money. Pay the IRS....nope.... buy an antique car instead. Pay for normal food and drink....nope....shop at a fine deli to the tune of $1000 a month.
But his homilies…. Well I can’t count the number of times he said “…you know, I don’t like to talk about money…” or “…if you don’t tithe, it is grievous sin…” Eventually many cut back on giving, rescinded their pledges, and came to realize the parish was getting deeper and deeper into trouble. Had the bishop intervened in any of the problems, we would all be okay and united today. But his homilies…. Yes some were pretty good.
14. Holy Spirit, under Fr. Thomas's leadership, only had altar boys serving all the masses---to promote vocations to the priesthood.
Answer: The number of boys was also the result of true efforts by a group of parishioners and all functions and growth were simply under the watch of Fr. Bill. It was the parish which was impressed with Fr Hardon and his altar boys and they were the ones who reacted for the change.

Answer: There was an independent group of parishioners that brought in the speakers each summer for our conferences.... and they began with permission from Fr. Tim..... not Fr. Bill
Fr. Bill really had NOTHING to do with the selection of speakers, the logistics, or even the money.... until he eventually ordered the money merged with the general fund under his control. One parishioner even brought in speakers at personal expense.
Yes he had lots of good traits too. But like us all, he had a sickness of sin... an active sin addiction to things pornographic.
When the rest of the cover-up is revealed people will be really angry (if they even care anymore). Their anger will not be at the parishioner who tried and failed to help Fr. Bill for 18 months..... it will be at people like yourself who try to spin this story away from the truth…. People like yourself you only encouraged Fr Bill to deny what he did.
